Jan Urban is not Carlo Ancelotti. And he has never pretended to be.
But, Urban is the right choice to be the next head coach of the Polish national team.
Ideally, the best choice would be Maciej Skorza or Marek Papszun, but both are currently leading successful clubs. Skorza just finished the Club World Cup with Japanese Urawa, is a coach who has job security and a good paying job for a prominent Asian football club. To leave that, for a team half-way through qualifying for the World Cup, which Poland has small odds of making, just wouldn't make sense.
Similarly for Papszun, who is coaching Raków Częstochowa, a project he basically build from scratch, would need to leave them just ahead of a new season and European campaign. There was zero chances he would do that.
That leaves foreign coaching candidates, and there seemed to be plenty. Who knows which were legit and which were not? But point remains, it was a highly coveted job from outsiders.
The problem is, for an outsider, they don't know what they are truly getting into. They don't know the drama that surrounds the team, the scandals, and theres been many last few years, they don't know the players. They would need to learn on the fly. It's possible they could've' but an unlikely task. Poland needed someone who knew what they were getting into. Someone who won't be unexpectedly told at a press conference from media about some situations he wasn't aware of. There was no time to learn the players, the schemes, formations, what works, what doesn't. At this particular time, a foreign coach just made no sense.
And that's where Urban comes in. A two-time league champion with Legia Warszawa, he managed Lech Poznań. managed Lukas Podolski with Górnik Zabrze, and also coached in Spain. He is a players-coach. He isn't one to yell, or try to intimidate, he tries to help the player out. He is the type of coach, who will punish a player, maybe even reduce his playing time, is never because Urban quit on him, it's because Urban wants whats best for him. No coach will fight for his players more then Urban will.
He knows what Poland needs to do. He knows the players. He is a coach that will play offensive, not try to sneak out a victory against a lower ranked team because points are the only important factor. Happy players, a happy team, smiles, and pressure taken off their shoulders, is what will get a team 3 points and sustain it.
Urban might not be the best coach, but he is the best option currently.
