Bayer Leverkusen after a hot start to the season with the breakout year for German teen prodigy Florian Wirtz, are beginning to mirror Bosz's Borussia Dortmund's side which showed all the promise in the world but to fall hard at the end.
In the last 7 league games, a total possibility of 21 points, Bayer Leverkusen have only earned 4. A surprising victory against Bosz's former club Dortmund and a draw against Werder Bremen were the only positive results. The other five matches, against Leipzig, Wolfsburg, Union Berlin, Frankfurt and Bayern Munich - all losses. They were outscored 2:7 in the five losses.
Bosz with Borussia Dortmund was the same story. They began the Bosz-era with five straight shutouts, a bundesliga record, and won 6 of 7 to start the season. His side was destroying opposition and it looked like they were not to be stopped, not even by league giants Bayern Munich, who just after seven matchdays fell five points behind their rivals.
As smart as Bosz is with the tactical side of football, his biggest flaw might be his stubbornness. In Dortmund, when the team began it's downfall, Bosz was asked if he would consider a plan B, in which he replied no, because they are just not playing up to standard of their plan A. He was too stubborn to realize that maybe his opponents had enough tape on his teams to contain or slow down his team, but rather it was his players under-performing their game plan tasks.
Currently, with opponents figuring out his team yet again, Bosz has remained true to his game plan, and continues to deploy his 4-3-3 each week. Despite the recent poor form however, Leverkusen just sit three-points from third place, but also just three-points separates them from eighth place.
The club has spend the money necessary to compete this season, the talent is there to battle for a champions league spot and the team shot off at the start of the season to give the them a real shot for not only a top 4 finish but also flirt with the league title. League title hopes are now dead. Even second place seems like a unlikely hill to climb. But finishing in one of the remaining two Champions League spots is still possible but Bosz has to change his ways, has to get creative and has to surprise their opponents with unexpected looks. Or else, this story is about to get even worse and Bosz will be once again send packing from a bundesliga side which he made look very promising but ended with a epic collapse.
